Just in case you feel you didn't get enough insane awesomeness from Gareth Evans' action movie The Raid 2: Berandal, we have five deleted scenes here for you to watch. It's pretty easy to place where these scenes would have fit into the movie. Most of them include some more intense moments that just didn't make the final cut in the already two and a half hour feature.
This is an extended version of the scene with Bunawar helping to clear Rama's name and remove him from the equation of what went down in The Raid. In this version we also added information about Andi's involvement in delivering the truck to Bunawar's office to reinforce the relationship hinted at in The Raid. This scene was streamlined in the final version of the film with Andi's moments taken out to avoid creating any confusion having already shown his death at the start of the film. The opening act played around with the chronology of events a lot and after much discussion this was deemed too much.
This sequence was intended to bridge the gap between Rama being given details about his undercover mission and to show how he ended up in prison. It was cut for pacing reasons (as all deleted scenes usually are) and also because we felt we already had dialogue that reinforced the reasons behind Rama's incarceration. The concept for the scene was to show Rama being introduced to a small organisation by a fellow undercover cop (played by Daniel Mananta) for the sole purpose of providing "insider" witnesses to the true target - the beatdown of the politicians son. Doing this earns Rama credibility and a reputation, it gets him into prison where word will spread and no one for a second would suspect that this psychopath who reacted so explosively is actually an undercover cop. We shot this sequence one night in T-Rexx Karaoke in Grand Indonesia, it took us 12 takes in order to execute the shot (a single take with a steadicam roaming the club). It was difficult letting go of it in the edit - but the issues that face shots like this are almost always due to the fact that seeing as it's an unbroken sequence you can't pick and choose or tighten the pacing. You go in with absolute conviction in the shot, but if the benefits of the scene don't outweigh the demands of the film overall - it becomes baggage.
This is an extension of the Funeral scene with an added explanation of what happened to Bowo (one of the surviving members of the SWAT Team in The Raid). The purpose of this scene was to show what happened after Bunawar attempts to cover up Rama's involvement in the raid on Tama's building and the subsequent investigation led by Reza. With the net closing in, Bunawar tries once more to get Rama to join his anti-corruption task force and with the net closing in he has little choice other than to follow. Not so interesting trivia... The set built for Bowo's house was used also for the Warden's Office with both scenes shot in the same day with a change of furniture and lighting style to help hide the similarities.
A small scene, pretty self-explanatory. Cut for pacing reasons.
This was a small scene to show Prakoso's home and a different side to his character away from his role as executioner. The concept was to show a fragility and a vulnerability in him, but again when it came to tightening the edit we felt this was already achieved by Yayan's performance in the scene with his ex-wife.
