8-BitDo Launches Wireless Mod Kit for Nintendo 64 Controller

8BitDo makes some really cool things for retro gamers to enjoy. They have various modern controllers for retro consoles/emulators but they also have mod kits that let you take your original controllers and modernize them a bit. I’ve really wanted to try one of these mod kits for the SNES controller, and now they have one for the Nintendo 64 controller.

These mod kits are designed so that you simply disassemble your original controller, remove the PCB, put in the new PCB (no soldering skills required), and reassemble the controller. What does it give you? It makes the controller wireless via Bluetooth with a rechargeable battery so now you can use it on your Nintendo Switch, Android device, and potentially more. The best part is that the most expensive mod kit package for the N64 controller is only $40 plus shipping which makes it cheaper than Nintendo’s official wireless N64 controller for the Nintendo Switch which normally retails for about $60. That most expensive package includes the Mod Kit, a Hall Effect Joystick, and a Rumble Pack which has a built-in rechargeable battery pack and a USB-C port for charging it and the controller.

Unfortunately, the mod kit is currently sold out, but I know I’m going to be checking back periodically to see when new stock is available. If you’re wanting to connect the controller to your N64, you will need an adapter like the one from RetroTime. Honestly, I don’t know that I want the Hall Effect Joystick, but what do you think> Will you be upgrading your controllers?
