Adam Savage Constructs a Model of THE SHINING's Overlook Hotel Maze
Mythbuster's Adam Savage has released a half-hour long video that shows him constructing a replica of the classic Overlook Hotel hedge maze from Stanley Kubrick's classic horror film, The Shining. Savage seems to really enjoy crafting replicas and movie props like this. He previously built Barbarella's Space Rifle and this amazing Alien space suit cosplay.
The maze project was prompted by Savage's attendence at a Kubrick exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. There he discovered that the hedge maze architectural model on display was completely different from the one that we all saw in the movie, so he took it upon himself to create a movie accurate version of the maze.
What made the project interesting is that there are several different versions of the maze in film, each with varying degrees of detail. The movie shows us the "architectural model in the Colorado room; the façade you see during the day; the top-down map in front of the maze; the quarter-sized one for the movie's finale and another for a zoom-out shot in the Colorado room." None of these are the same. So Savage ended up using the map in the film for the basis of the model he built. That map gave him the best reference material.
Over the span of a month, Adam designed and built an accurate replica of the hedge maze architectural model from Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. The maze model, as seen in The Overlook Hotel, is only seen briefly, but reference screenshots from throughout the film allowed Adam to painstakingly recreate it. The project ended up as one of Adam's more labor-intensive builds in recent memory!
It turned out to be pretty awesome! Check out the video.
