Animated GHOSTBUSTERS Feature Film in Development at Sony

Not only is Sony Pictures developing a couple of live-action Ghostbusters reboots, but according to The Tracking Board, the studio is also in the process of making an animated film. I'll be honest, I didn't see this coming. It's actually a bit more exciting for me than the upcoming live-action film projects, though.

According to the report, the film will be an action-comedy that "will follow a similar logline to that of the 1984 original, in which a group of scientists team up to fight off ghosts, using gadgets and gizmos to capture the menacing ghouls who have invaded Manhattan."

Ivan Reitman, the director of the original two films, is reportedly attached to the new project as a producer, along with producer Tom Pollock. Sony obviously has big plans to revive the franchise, and it was even rumored at one point that the studio was going to try a develop a cimematic universe. I don't think this animated film would be a part of that, though. This seems like it would be a completely separate from the live-action films just like the animated Spider-Man movie that is being developed over at the studio by Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

This isn't the first time Ghostbusters has gotten an animated adaptation. In 1986 we were treated to The Real Ghostbusters, and in 1997 there was the Extreme Ghostbusters series.

Director Paul Feig's reboot wrapped production last week and is set to be released on July 15th, 2016. The other Ghostbusters film in development is the one that Channing Tatum is attached to, and Iron Man 3 scribe Drew Pearce wrote the script. It's also being produced by Anthony and Joe Russo (Captain America: Civil War).

As a big fan of animated films and Ghostbusters, I am curious to see what exactly they are planning for this project. What do you think about Sony making an animated Ghostbusters movie?
