AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON to Completely Overhaul Team Roster?

We all know that the members of the Avengers team from the first movie are all coming back for Avengers: Age of Ultron and that they’ll be augmented by Paul Bettany as The Vision and Aaron Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen as the magical-don’t-call-us-mutant brother and sister duo of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. However, a rumor originating from Badass Digest suggests a much bigger sea change is on the horizon. Possible Age of Ultron SPOILERS ahead…

The very nature and fun of the Avengers team is its revolving door, which allows for greater tonal shifts as the remaining characters evolve. Throughout the comics there have been several major change ups to the roster. As Devin from Badass points out, after only being introduced as a member in Avengers #4, Captain America replaced all of the original team members in Avengers #16. Well, it looks like Cap could be reorganizing the team in the Marvel cinematic universe as well. According to their sources, towards the end of the film Steve Rogers will assemble a new team of familiar and new faces. Apparently, the list of new members has changed in-between drafts, aside from one name, Captain Marvel.

However, the studio is even considering holding back on the introduction of that character. Badass notes,

“But now I'm hearing that Marvel has cold feet about including her in the film. Not because they're against the character - my sources assure me she is coming and it's very plausible she could be on the team in Avengers 3 - but because they're not certain they want to introduce her in this way. They basically aren't certain they want to just drop her into the MCU fully formed in a team movie.”

Badass also reports that the studio is trying to avoid straight-up origin stories. So we’ll be given more films where we hit the ground running like Thor and Guardians of Galaxy, as opposed to more traditional origin stories that we’ve seen from Marvel like Iron Man and Captain America: The First Avenger. Introducing important Phase 3 characters at the end of the final chapter of Phase 2 would certainly help that strategy, a strategy similar to the one Warner Bros. hopes pays off for their DC movie universe.

With Joaquin Phoenix looking close to signing on as Doctor Strange, he could possibly show up at the end of Age of Ultron. As could one of two Ant-Men (Michael Douglas or Paul Rudd), especially considering his solo film will premiere later that summer.

Since this reassembling scene would take place towards the end of the film, if it’s not already shot, Marvel could cast the roles and shoot the scene closer to the release of the film to help keep the characters and casting under wraps.

These are all just rumors for now, but very plausible ones that could spell danger for some of the original Avengers team, or at least, the actors who play them.
