BATMAN V SUPERMAN Costume Designer Discusses Super Suits

Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is going to introduce several heroes to the big screen to help launch Warner Bros' DC cinematic universe. We'll see Henry Cavill’s Superman, Ben Afleck’s Batman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, and most likely Ezra Miller’s The Flash, and Ray Fisher’s Cyborg. All of these character need new costumes, and it must be a pretty big undertaking to be the person who is designing them — especially because the fan community is going to pick them apart.

While speaking with Fashionista, costume designer and Oscar nominee Michael Wilkinson discussed the process of coming up with these designs, and working with Snyder to get the look of the characters just right.

“(Zack) really wants these characters to connect directly to our world. So if you were walking down the street and you came across Superman or Batman — of course it would be startling and powerful — but it could actually happen in our world rather than in a stylized version of our reality.”

He goes on to say that giving Batman a flexible cowl was one of his first notes on the costume design. This is something that we haven't really seen in any of the previous Batman films.

“That’s actually one of the first things that Snyder mentioned to me in one of our initial meetings. It’s a very important thing to Zack that the Batsuit would be comfortable and very flexible, but then would be able to perform in a very natural and forceful way. So a lot of incredible engineering went into the development of the new black cowl…It’s no longer a designer just in his workroom pushing a costume out into the world and that’s it. There’s a real sense of a conversation and engaging in a dialogue about this stuff.”

Wilkinson also talked about about what its like getting the actors into their costumes. He reveals that it takes 15 minutes to get Cavill into his outfit and Affleck closer to 25 minutes — that's not exactly superhero speeds.

“It does involve multiple costumers. It’s not the sort of thing that I could just sit in Ben’s trailer and he gets into it himself. It’s a six-handed operation.”

I guess it's a good thing Bruce Wayne has Alfred to help him in and our of the thing. I would love to get a new, more detailed look at the Batman costume, so I hope we get a new image soon. When asked about Aquaman's costume, Wilkinson explains that it was a “huge challenge” because the superhero’s past character designs have made him not as “cool” as the other superheroes.

“People have a lot of complaints about the orange skin and the green tights and that whole thing.”

Well, as you saw from the image of Jason Mamoa that was released, they definitely did away with that stuff. A lot of fans have seemed to embrace the new costume design for him. While we wait for a trailer from the film, I'll keep updating you on anything interesting that comes out way.

Batman v Superman also stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Jena Malone, Holly Hunter and Scoot McNairy. It hits theaters on March 25th, 2016.
