Brad Bird on the Challenges of Making THE INCREDIBLES 2
Last week, news hit that Brad Bird’s next film will be The Incredibles 2 for Pixar. He’s been developing a story for it for some time now, but he admits in an interview with IGN that it’s not going to be an easy process to make the film. He talked about one challenge he would have to face while making the movie, and that challenge is overcoming the over-saturation of superhero movies.
“A lot of superhero films have been made since Incredibles and it is kind of like an athletic field that’s just kind of dried up dirt now, with a few clumps of grass. And I think what the challenge is how do you step outside of that and say, ‘Hey, there’s another place for our heroes to go.’ So that’s kind of the challenge.”
He went on to say:
“People make a lot of following some kind of road map and Damon [Lindelof] and I can tell you from making [Tomorrowland] that you’re just bumping into furniture. Hopefully if you’re on the right path you don’t actually know where you’re going completely. I love those characters in Incredibles, but I’m also a moviegoer and I want to be surprised by movies. I want them to zig when they should be zagging. That’s the goal with that one.”
It’s going to be a few years before we see The Incredibles back on the big screen, so Bird has plenty of time to figure out how he wants to surprise his fans with the sequel. At this point it sounds like he’s got a story he wants to tell — now it’s going into the process of figuring out how to make it work in the best possible ways.
