Chris Hemsworth Discovered His Warlord Dementus Character in FURIOSA By Writing a Journal as The Character

Chris Hemsworth recently revealed how he discovered his villainous character Warlord Demintus in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. It came through writing a journal as the character.

During a recent interview with Total Film, Hemsworth explained: “George suggested to me to journal as the character, which I hadn’t done before.”

He added: “It was 2am one night. I was awake, and I just put pen to paper, and just started scribbling down thoughts and ideas as Dementus.”

He continued: “I didn’t think much of it. I went to sleep, and woke up, and was quite shocked at what came out of me in that half-asleep state. I went into rehearsal and showed George, and we both went, ‘That’s it. That’s the direction we’ve got to go.”

The character is certainly very different from any kind of character that Hemsworth has played before, and he looks absolutely insane! It’ll be great how his full story arc plays out.

Hemsworth also shared how Miller’s script attracted him due to the deeper conflicts between Furiosa and Dementus, saying: “There was a great sense of continuity to what had been done before.”

“But what was exciting was, with a lot of the dialogue, there was a sort of Shakespearean tone to it. It’s an epic tale. You see a real growth and change in the characters, or the demise in others. You see the environments they inhabit break down. But it has some insane action in it, as well.”

In the film, "As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus.

“Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home."

Miller previously talked about the movie and revealed that the story takes place over the course of 15 to 18 years and that it leads directly into the events of Mad Max: Fury Road.

Miller went on to say that, “It’s a different animal. It’s got many different locations. It’s an odyssey. No question.” As for a possible appearance from Max Rockatansky himself, Miller said: “I won’t give away too much about that. All I’ll say is, Max is lurking there in the background.”

The cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Tom Burke, Angus Sampson, Nathan Jones, Daniel Webber, Lachy Hulme, and Quaden Bayles.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is scheduled to hit theaters on May 24, 2024.
