The House of Representatives Has Approved the Banning of TikTok in the U.S.

The United States House of Representatives has voted in favor of a bill banning TikTok in the United States. I’m not surprised by any of this as the government has been looking to ban it for years.

The bill will now have to get approved in the Senate and then it will have to be signed by President Biden. After that happens, TikTok's owner ByteDance will have five months to sell the company. After that time, companies like Apple and Google would be prohibited from offering the app in their stores.

It has yet to be determined if ByteDance will sell TikTok, or if the company will just shut down operations in the United States. According to CNN, TikTok is currently used by more than 170 million Americans, and they’re all wondering what will happen from here.

The whole reason for the ban is because TikTok is owned by a Chinese company and legislators in the United States have been arguing that the Chinese government would be able to spy on citizens through the country's intelligence laws. There’s a lot of concern that TikTok could end up proving to be a threat to national security.

TikTok has opposed the legislation and influencers on the app have been calling their state representatives to try and save the app. People have built businesses out of TikTok, it’s how a lot of people make a living, so it’s understandable that they would be scared that the app could very well be shut down in the U.S.
