Darren Aronofsky to Adapt Futuristic MADDADDAM Books for HBO
Darren Aronofsky is going to adapt the futuristic MaddAddam book trilogy for HBO. They were written by Margaret Atwood, and the three books are called, Oryx and Crake (2003), Year Of The Flood (2009), and MaddAddam (2013). Aronofsky is only producing the project for now, but according to Deadline, he may end up directing it as well.
The story is described by the author as “speculative fiction,” which is apparently a genre she made up. It's set "in the mid-21st century in a world where corporations have taken over for governments and the genetic modification of organisms is perversely ubiquitous. It centers on the events before and after a Waterless Flood that wipes out almost all of the world’s population and follows an extensive cast of characters, including those responsible for the apocalypse and those struggling to survive it."
Sounds like a pretty intense story, and the kind of concept that fits in perfectly with HBO's programming. I'll definitely be tuning in to watch it! The filmmaker and his team are currently meeting with writers to pen the series. With Aronofsky on board to develop the project, it's sure to turn out great.

Oryx and Crake

In this second book of the MaddAddam trilogy, the long-feared waterless flood has occurred, altering Earth as we know it and obliterating most human life. Among the survivors are Ren, a young trapeze dancer locked inside the high-end sex club Scales and Tails, and Toby, who is barricaded inside a luxurious spa. Amid shadowy, corrupt ruling powers and new, gene-spliced life forms, Ren and Toby will have to decide on their next move, but they can't stay locked away.
MaddAddam
Months after the Waterless Flood pandemic has wiped out most of humanity, Toby and Ren have rescued their friend Amanda from the vicious Painballers. They return to the MaddAddamite cob house, newly fortified against man and giant pigoon alike. Accompanying them are the Crakers, the gentle, quasi-human species engineered by the brilliant but deceased Crake. Their reluctant prophet, Snowman-the-Jimmy, is recovering from a debilitating fever, so it's left to Toby to preach the Craker theology, with Crake as Creator. She must also deal with cultural misunderstandings, terrible coffee, and her jealousy over her lover, Zeb.
Zeb has been searching for Adam One, founder of the God's Gardeners, the pacifist green religion from which Zeb broke years ago to lead the MaddAddamites in active resistance against the destructive CorpSeCorps. But now, under threat of a Painballer attack, the MaddAddamites must fight back with the aid of their newfound allies, some of whom have four trotters. At the center of MaddAddam is the story of Zeb's dark and twisted past, which contains a lost brother, a hidden murder, a bear, and a bizarre act of revenge.
