Did Lexus Just Unveil a Real Functioning Hoverboard!? Yes, They Did!
My mind has just been blown. Lexus released a promo video that you can watch below featuring a real hoverboard that they have actually created. It's called SLIDE, and over the coming weeks, they will be bringing us regular updates on the progress of this extraordinary project.
I'm seriously beside myself with excitement right now! I never thought we'd see anything like this, but like Marty and George McFly say, "If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything." It's so strange and cool to see the technology of Back to the Future Part II coming to life. Who knows — maybe now we'll actually see someone turn a DeLorean into a time machine.
Lexus spokesman Moe Durand told USA Today that an independent contractor designed and built the hoverboard, and that it really does work, but as of right now it only operates in a controlled environment. Hey, they have to start somewhere! Here is the breakdown from Lexus that includes some specs on how it works:
Through the combination of design, technology and imagination…
SLIDE is a perfect example of the amazing things that can be achieved.
The Lexus Hoverboard uses magnetic levitation to achieve amazing frictionless movement.
Liquid nitrogen cooled superconductors and permanent magnets combine to allow Lexus to create the impossible.
Wrapped in a design that is uniquely Lexus, the Hoverboard features the iconic Lexus spindle grille signature shape, using materials found in the luxury car brand, from the high tech to the natural bamboo.
Mark Templin, executive vice president of Lexus International said this in a statement:
"At Lexus, we constantly challenge ourselves and our partners to push the boundaries of what is possible. That determination, combined with our passion and expertise for design and innovation, is what led us to take on the Hoverboard project. It's the perfect example of the amazing things that can be achieved when you combine technology, design and imagination."
I can't wait to find out more about this thing. It looks like Lexus is our best chance of actually being about to own a hoverboard one day. I'll be the first in line to buy it!
