Director Joe Carnahan Set to Write the UNCHARTED Movie for Sony
Joe Carnahan, the director of films such as Smokin' Aces, The A-Team, The Grey, and the upcoming Bad Boys 3, is set to write a new script for Sony Pictures' big-screen adaptation of the hit video game Uncharted.
The film project has been in development for years, but the studio seems to trust that Carnahan can deliver a solid script. I can only imagine that his script will be very unconventional like the rest of this movies are. Carnahan will not direct the film. While talking to Variety, he said he wouldn't have the time unless the production date is pushed back. He told them:
“In a perfect world I would love to do both, but right now, I’m only on board to write the script.”
He's gearing up to direct Will Smith in Bad Boys 3 soon. He seems extremely excited to have the opportunity to be involved with Uncharted, though. The filmmaker went on to say:
“Archaeology today is in itself an antiquity, but that world has always fascinated me. Especially when you go to a museum today and wonder how a piece got there to begin with. Plus, the property itself is so popular that it was hard to turn down an opportunity to work on it.”
Carnahan's films are a blast to watch, so there's no doubt that he'll give us something thrilling. I do hope that he sticks to the vibe of the games and what makes them so awesome. David O. Russell and Mark Wahlberg were previously attached to the project at one point, and I would have loved to see Russell's take on the property, but that ship has sailed.
The story for the game focuses on a treasure hunter named Nate Drake, who is a descendent of explorer Sir Francis Drake. He believes he has learned the location of the legendary golden South American city of El Dorado from a cursed statue. While on his search El Dorado, things take a turn when a rival treasure hunter joins in on the search. Along the way, Drake faces crazy creatures, mutated descendants of Spaniards, and even Nazis.
Previous scripts for the film were written by Mark Boal (Zero Dark Thirty) and Marianne and Cormac Wibberley (National Treasure). Do you think that Carnahan is the right guy to take a crack at the script for Uncharted?
