Disney Developing Another Live Action TOWER OF TERROR Movie
Disney already produced a made-for-TV movie based on its Tower of Terror theme park ride back in 1997 that starred Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst, but it looks like the studio is getting back in the elevator for another ride.
Deadline reports that the studio is working on a new Tower of Terror film from a treatment by John August (Big Fish, Go, Charlie's Angels, Frankenweenie), and they're currently searching for a writer to flesh it out into a screenplay. The story follows five people in hotel elevator who disappear when it's hit by lightning. No word on a director or cast yet — this is very early on in the process, and I wouldn't be surprised if this ultimately fell by the wayside to make room for more of Disney's live-action fairy tale adaptations. But they're all about name recognition right now, and maybe enough people have been to the theme parks and have ridden the ride that they'll be vaguely interested in a theatrical take on it.
The studio is certainly no stranger to the idea of turning rides into movies, with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Tomorrowland (loosely based on the Disneyland area), and Eddie Murphy's The Haunted Mansion under its belt and Jon Favreau's The Magic Kingdom and Dwayne Johnson's Jungle Cruise still on the agenda.
