Disney Developing Live-Action ALADDIN Prequel
Unsurprisingly, Disney is turning another one of their animated properties into a live action movie. They will be developing a prequel to the 1992 film Aladdin.
The movie will be called Genies, and it will be written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. According to THR the new story will focus on "the realm of the Genies and reveal how Aladdin's Genie ended up enslaved in the lamp."
I'm sorry, but it just won't be the same without Robin Williams. He turned the Genie into what we all loved, and it will be hard to see anyone else take on that role. I don't think anyone has the same kind of energy that Williams brought to the character. I imagine they are going to reinvent the character for the new film, which isn't really much of a better option.
The long-term plan for the franchise is for this prequel to lead into a live-action remake of the original Aladdin movie.
The funniest part about this whole prequel project is that the writers they brought on to develop it also worked on Freddy vs. Jason, the Friday the 13th remake, and the upcoming Baywatch movie.
Judging by their previous work, I'm not expecting much from this upcoming film. It would be interesting if Genies was a horror movie, but we all know Disney isn't going to go that route.
