Disney's Live-Action MULAN Remake Will Cast a Chinese Actress, Slated To Hit Theaters in 2018
Disney first announced its interest in a live-action Mulan remake way back in March of last year, but now THR brings word that the film has a release date: November 2, 2018.
The good news: Disney is launching a global casting search for a Chinese actress to play the lead role. That's a refreshing change of pace when Hollywood seems content to whitewash parts left and right and trot out the excuse that they can only get movies greenlit if they have established stars in the leading roles.
Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek wrote the original spec script, and the studio has hired Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Avatar 2 and 3) to rewrite the film's screenplay into "a more nuanced and elaborate adaptation" which combines "the legendary Chinese ballad and the 1998 animated film." No director has been announced yet, so we'll keep you posted with more news at it comes in.
