DREDD Producer Adi Shankar Rumored to Be Up for the VENOM Directing Gig
Sony Pictures has yet to hire a director to helm their upcoming Venom movie. I'd previously heard that Alex Kurtzman (The Mummy) would be directing it, but it doesn't look like that's the case at all. The studio has a short list of directors they want to bring on, and according to Splash Report, Dredd producer Adi Shankar is on that list.
This wouldn't be the first time that Shankar will have played with the Venom material. He produced a short film called "Truth in Journalism" that featured a very different and unique take on the character. If you've never seen it, check it out here. This is one of several fan productions he's developed.
This new Venom film is being billed as an R-rated action, horror, and sci-fi film that will launch a new cinematic universe for Sony Pictures that will also include Silver Sable and Black Cat. The studio is looking to get this thing on the fast track as it's said they want to start shooting this fall.
Shankar has done a great job producing films including Lone Survivor, The Voices, The Grey, and more. But he's never directed a film, so I have no idea if this is something he would actually be good at or not. The guy is definitely a big fanboy, but that doesn't make a good director. If he does end up landing the gig, it will be interesting to see how he handles the character when adapting him for a feature film.
Sony is looking to release Venom in theaters on October 5, 2018. What do you think about the possibility of Shankar taking the helm on Venom?
