Dwayne Johnson Says SHAZAM Could Arrive Earlier Than Expected
When Warner Bros. initially announced their slate of DC Comics films, they said Shazam wasn't going to be released until 2019. That's quite a long way out, but according to Dwayne Johnson, who is set to play Black Adam in the movie, we might not have to wait four years to see it. Here's what he said when MTV caught up with him on the red carpet at the Oscars:
“It may happen a little earlier than what has been predicted. The script is coming in, it’s great, the support from the studio has been great. It’s just a great opportunity, especially with Black Adam where you can take a guy who starts off as a bad guy, turns into an anti-hero, we can make him vicious, a little bit of winking charm.”
Johnson goes on to confirm they are still not sure who will play Shazam in the movie. The script for the film is being written by Jack the Giant Slayer writer Darren Lemke. The movie will tell the story of teenager Billy Batson, who transforms into a superhero when he uses the magic word "Shazam!"
The movie is currently set to be released on April 5th, 2019. Who knows how far the studio will want to move it up from that date, though. I guess it depends on how the character will fit in with the rest of their shared cinematic universe.
