GAME OF THRONES Emilia Clarke Clarified Her Comments About Sex Scenes

On Monday, I wrote about Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke's stance on sex scenes in film and television — and how she "can't stand" them — but this morning the 28-year-old actress took to her Instagram page to say she was quoted out of context and to provide clarification about her thoughts on the topic:

I was followed into a party by a journalist who asked me a question about female empowerment and then quoted me entirely out of context for an outlet I didn’t agree to speak with. So I feel now, with the beauty of Instagram I should clarify my statements, if for nothing else than for posterity. In drama, if a nude scene forwards a story or is shot in a way that adds insight into characters, I’m perfectly fine with it. Sometimes explicit scenes are required and make sense for the characters/story, as they do in Westeros. If it’s gratuitous for gratuitous sake, then I will discuss with a director on how to make it more subtle. It's always better to hear quotes straight from actors themselves rather than potentially have things be taken out of context, and that's one of the best things about social media these days. Something comes out about you in an article that you don't agree with? You can instantly clarify your statement directly to the world, without having to wait for another interview to bring up the same topic. Our comment section was very divided about this last time around, so I'd be interested to hear what you all think about Clarke's clarification here.
