First Look at the Twisted Fairy Tale INTO THE WOODS
Some of us have been anxiously awaiting the film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods, and Disney has given us our first look at the movie, dumping ten stills from the film on an unsuspecting internet. We've seen set photos, but these are the first stills from the actual movie. We are hoping it will be awesome, and judging from these, it will at least look good.
Fans of the musical have been worried that the movie is overly Disneyfied since Sondheim reportedly told arts educators that at least one important song and story point had been cut and that Disney had objected to another storyline and changed an important death. The original stage musical is pretty dark and chockfull of innuendo. He later released a statement calling it a “faithful adaptation of the show” and “a first-rate movie,” assuring fans that the song is in the film after all, although he didn't mention the other issues. So our hopes are cautiously high again.
The large cast includes James Corden as the Baker, Emily Blunt as the Baker’s Wife, Meryl Streep as the Witch, Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Chris Pine as Cinderella’s Prince, Johnny Depp as the Wolf, and Christine Baranski as the Stepmother. Rob Marshall directed.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Into the Woods is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests.
This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.
Into the Woods opens this Christmas.
