GANGSTER SQUAD Director Ruben Fleischer is Turning The COPS TV Series Into a Movie
Bad boys, bad boys, what you gonna do? Wait, I just wrote about Bad Boys For Life like five minutes ago. What's this now?
Well, one of the inspirations for that film franchise's name was the mega-popular TV series Cops, which used the Inner Circle song "Bad Boys" as its opening theme song:
The Emmy winning show debuted in 1989 and was partly responsible for the reality TV boom that came in the late '90s and early 2000s. You might be surprised to know that it's still airing new episodes, but what may not surprise you is the news from Deadline that Gangster Squad director Ruben Fleischer is going to adapt the series into a feature film.
The idea is to turn that [show's] vibe — best known for its catchy theme song — into an edgy narrative feature with a buddy comedy bent on the order of a Lethal Weapon.
So...it's just a buddy cop comedy? I can't imagine how this could improve on something like End of Watch, which itself sort of seemed like a film version of Cops. I have no clue why a studio thinks they need the brand recognition of that show to launch a movie. This one's baffling to me. I haven't watched the show in years, but am I missing something? Are there regular "characters" on the show that would make compelling film characters? I'm sort of at a loss here.
