George Miller Is Reportedly in Pre-Production on a MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Prequel
For those of you who have been waiting for news regarding a new Mad Max movie, today is your lucky day. The Herald Sun is reporting that director George Miller is currently in development on a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road. The news comes from a "highly placed onset source" who says the film is called Mad Max: Wasteland, which is a title that has been previously mentioned as being a working title, and it's currently in pre-production.
According to the report, the story will focus on Furiosa's backstory, which is something I think a lot of fans speculated could happen. They go on to say that Miller is "gearing up" for the project, which "could start as soon as later this year" at Broken Hill Film Studio in Austrailia.
Miller has previously said that he plans to make at least two more Mad Max films and that he would love to tell the story of Furiosa because she is such a compelling character. Tom Hardy is signed on to do two more films, but I'm not sure how Max would fit into a prequel story that focuses on Furiosa, unless there is a separate parallel story that deals with Max in the same time period.
Furiosa is such an awesome and badass character, and it will be great to see Charlize Theron come back to reprise her role. Until we have confirmation from the studio, treat this news as a rumor, but it's a rumor I really hope is true!
Miller did say he was looking to do a smaller film project as his next endeavor, but maybe he decided to ditch that idea and just jump back into the world of Mad Max, which I don't think fans will have a problem with.
