GODS OF EGYPT Super Bowl Spot - "Bow Before Me or Die"

Director Alex Proyas has made some solidly good films in his day, like The Crow and Dark City. I know the guy has got some talent, but since Dark City he hasn’t picked up any directing gigs that have turned out to be great films. When I first heard about Gods of Egypt I was excited that it might be an awesome film that Proyas could develop. Unfortunately, it looks like another lackluster, disappointing movie.

The movie boasts an impressive cast that includes Gerard Butler as Set, the god of the desert; Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Horus, the god of the sky; Brenton Thwaites as Bek, the thief of legend; Chadwick Boseman as Thoth, the god of Wisdom; Elodie Yung as Hathor, the goddess of love; and Abby Lee as Zaya, the beauty of the Nile.

It’s hard to think that with a cast like this you could come up with something that looks so ridiculous. There’s a ton of special effect work that went into developing this movie, but what does it matter if there’s a weak script and story?

In this spectacular action-adventure inspired by the classic mythology of Egypt, the survival of mankind hangs in the balance as an unexpected mortal hero Bek [Brenton Thwaites] undertakes a thrilling journey to save the world and rescue his true love. In order to succeed, he must enlist the help of the powerful god Horus [Nikolaj Coster-Waldau] in an unlikely alliance against Set [Gerard Butler], the merciless god of darkness, who has usurped Egypt’s throne, plunging the once peaceful and prosperous empire into chaos and conflict.  As their breathtaking battle against Set and his henchmen takes them into the afterlife and across the heavens, both god and mortal must pass tests of courage and sacrifice if they hope to prevail in the epic final confrontation.

The movie also stars Geoffrey Rush, Rufus Sewell, and Courtney Eaton. Gods of Egypt is set to be released in theaters on February 26th, 2016.
