Hey Marvel Studios! Please Don’t Ditch Comic-Con 2015

Rant MarvelComic-Con by Joey Paur

As most of you readers know, I’m both a huge fan of Marvel, and San Diego Comic-Con is my favorite event of the year to attend. Yesterday, word broke from James Gunn that Marvel Studios would not be attending the event this year, and it left fans in a disappointed uproar.

Marvel Studios: it’s really hard to imagine going to Comic-Con and not seeing one of your panels. That has been a highlight of the epic geek event ever since Jon Favreau got up on stage and blew fans away with footage from Iron Man! It was a mind-blowing experience that I’ll never forget. Since then, you've become a Comic-Con staple with a panel that is not to be missed by any fan.

The Comic-Con fans helped make Marvel Studios what it is today. They did this by building the hype and spreading the word and getting other fans excited. One of the main reasons a lot of us fans go to Comic-Con is to go to the Marvel panel and support your movies, and you always put on one of the best and most entertaining panels at the convention.

On behalf of the all the Marvel fans out there…please don’t leave us hanging at Comic-Con 2015.

I was chatting with a couple of our other writers about this and one of them said that between Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, and Pixar, Disney Studios doesn’t need Comic-Con. But that’s not the point - the point is the loyal fans who fight to attend this event. You’ve always been good to the fans, and this is an event they expect you to attend.

I understand that Disney owns you now, and that you have other outlets like the D23 Expo and the El Captain Theater to hold events. But neither of those venues seat 6,000 screaming fans supporting your work. On top of that, Marvel and Comic-Con just seem to go together like Rocket and Groot. It’s the one event that I feel you have an obligation to attend for the fans.

It was also brought up in our conversation that there is an opportunity for you to do more TV events to include more of your audience. I know that 6,000 fans is a very small percentage of the millions of other fans around the world, but that doesn’t mean Comic-Con should be left in the dust.

If you are looking to open things up to fans on a broader scale, then do something that has never been done at Comic-Con before: stream your Comic-Con panel event live! Let the whole world in on Marvel’s Comic-Con action!

I don’t know if any of this is the reason why you don’t plan on coming to Comic-Con this year. Maybe it’s something completely different and I’m way off base. Maybe James Gunn didn’t know what in the hell he has talking about. All I know is that you have an amazing line-up of films on the way, and I know that your fans would really appreciate it if you dropped by to talk about what you’re doing with these movies that will propel the MCU forward, and maybe even show some cool stuff off if you have it.

In the end, it’s a tradition for Marvel to be in Hall H at Comic-Con. Please don’t break that tradition. Come on down to San Diego Comic-Con, the fans would love to have you there. Comic-Con just wouldn't be the same without you.
