Hugh Jackman Says LOGAN Is Not Set in the X-Men Cinematic Universe

As you've seen in the trailers, Logan is a very different kind of X-Men film than we've seen before. Now, we've learned from Hugh Jackman that the entire story itself takes place in a completely different universe! I didn't think that would be the case, but I guess it makes sense because the Old Man Logan comic was set in an alternate universe as well. When talking to Digital Spy, Jackman explained:

"When you see the full movie you'll understand. Not only is it different in terms of timeline and tone, it's a slightly different universe. It's actually a different paradigm and that will become clear."

He also discussed why he and director James Mangold took the film down this alternate universe path, saying:

"I said this was my last one and they said make the movie you want to make. And so Jim and I had this blank canvas and we wanted to make something really different. Definitely tonally different, I kept thinking The Wrestler, Unforgiven. It's a stand alone movie in many ways. It's not really beholden to time lines and story lines in the other movies. Obviously Patrick Stewart was in there so we have some crossover but it feels very different and very fresh.
"[Following the timelines] becomes a chess game that you try to serve, which actually doesn't help to tell a story and it's sort of been a bit all over the place. I'm not critical of it – X-Men was the first movie really in comic book, no one thought there'd be another and there were different directors different off shoots."

I actually like the fact that Logan will be a standalone film. It just means that they were able to tell a clean solid story without worrying about any kind of continuity that would mess up the story they set out to tell.

All I know is that both trailers have been incredible! I love everything I've seen, and it looks like this film is going to set a whole new high for comic book films.

I'm not sure what this means for X-23 or Wolverine in future X-Men films, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see what Fox has planned.
