Impressive Trailer for Single-Take Action Film VICTORIA
Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity seems to have popularized the idea of filming in one long, continuous shot - or at least giving the illusion of there only being one shot. Shows like True Detective and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia recently employed the technique, and most notably Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Birdman garnered nine Academy Award nominations after using that method, but there's a new movie coming out of Berlin that might have topped them all when it comes to the one-shot aesthetic. The Playlist points us to a trailer for a film called Victoria, and the trailer boasts that the entire movie was shot in an unbroken single take. That's pretty damn impressive if it's true.
Director Sebastian Schipper's movie is earning solid reviews out of the Berlinale Film Festival, and apparently it's already been scooped up for U.S. distribution, so we'll all have a chance to see it sooner or later. I'm always entranced by long continuous shots, and the idea of literally making an entire movie that way is both horrifying from a production standpoint and exciting from an acting standpoint. It means that everything has to be perfect for the entire time: no hidden cuts or CG can save you. It's all out there on the line. That kind of audacious filmmaking deserves to be acknowledged and seen, so I'm glad we'll have a chance to check this out for ourselves.
