James Wan in Talks to Direct ROBOTECH
James Wan, the director of Furious 7, Insidious and The Conjuring, is in talks to direct a live-action feature film adaptation of Robotech! Wan has become a favorite director of mine over the last few years. If he actually directs Robotech, I would be ecstatic! He's absolutely the perfect director to take on this project, and I have no doubt that he would deliver one hell of an amazing film.
The news comes from Deadline, who says that even though Wan has a lot of directing offers that he can choose from right now, Sony is willing to work around whatever projects he ends up taking on. This would be another huge franchise for Wan, who is currently gearing up to direct the sequel to The Conjuring.
I've been a fan of Robotech since the '80s, when I was first introduced to the animated series as a kid. I loved this show, and I've been wanting to see it adapted into a movie for years. It has been in development for quite a long time already, and it has been through the hands of a few different directors, but if Wan comes on board it's sure to finally actually happen.
Last month we learned that Sony was looking to move fast on the project, and it looks like they're actually really serious about getting it up and running. The movie is being developed by producers Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton from a script written by Michael Gordon. All three of these individuals worked together on Zack Snyder's 300.
Robotech takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off an alien invasion, with the fate of the human race ending up in the hands of two young pilots.
What do you think of Wan possibly taking on the challenge of bringing Robotech to the big screen?
