James Wan's MALIGNANT MAN to Be Directed by SAN ANDREAS Director Brad Payton
San Andreas director Brad Payton has been hired to helm a sci-fi action film being produced by James Wan called Malignant Man.
The project is set up at Fox Studios and is based on a comic book property that Wan co-created for Boom! Studios. I'm not familiar with the comic, but it definitely has an interesting premise that has the potential to be a solid film.
The story focuses on a character named Alex Gates, "a patient dying of a terminal disease who is resigned to his fate … until he discovers that his malignant tumor is actually a mysterious alien parasite. Now with some incredible powers and a renewed purpose, Gates is tasked with fighting a secret army lurking behind the veils of society while also peeling back his own secrets."
I'm curious to see how this turns out. Peyton's San Andreas was a fun movie, and I think he could do some great things with this film, especially with Wan there to help guide the project. The script for the film was already written by Zak Olkewicz.
Wan most recently directed The Conjuring 2, which came out last weekend. The director is also working on Aquaman and Robotech films for Warner Bros. As for Payton, he recently wrapped shooting on a film for Netflix called Frontier, which is set in the 18th-century world of the North American fur trade. He's also set to direct a feature film adaptation of the classic video game Rampage with Dwayne Johnson.
