Jesse Eisenberg Doesn't Know if Lex Luthor is Returning in JUSTICE LEAGUE

Spoilers for Batman v Superman ahead.

Jesse Eisenberg's take on Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been just about a polarizing as the film itself. Some people liked the spazzy, twitchy, millennial version of the villainous billionaire, while others — myself included — felt as if the actor walked in from a totally different movie. His performance was all over the place and many of his actions were inexplicable to me — you can't just say "Well, he's Lex Luthor! Of course he hates Superman! What did you expect?" and wave those issues away. What was his end game with releasing Doomsday on the city? There's no way he knew that both he and Superman would kill each other at the end of their fight. Anyway...

Luthor ends the movie ranting about bells being rung and hinting at the coming of Darkseid, but will we see Lex in 2017's Justice League? Despite the fact that the movie begins filming in two weeks, Eisenberg himself claims he doesn't know the answer. He tells Business Insider:

“I don’t know if they are so settled on where my character goes. I only hope I have another opportunity to work with these wonderful people and play this interesting character.”

The actor does say that he'd be "thrilled" to return to the role, but it's probably not a great sign that the Warner Bros./DC creatives "aren't so settled" on what happens to one of the most iconic characters in comic book history. Seems like he should know if he's going to be needed on set in a few weeks, at the very least. But for his part, Eisenberg appreciates the different elements of Lex:

“The character has so many different faces. He has a public persona that appears charming and friendly and then a deeply disturbed private persona, so it will be interesting to see where he goes.”

Justice LeaguePart 1 hits theaters on November 17, 2017.
