J.J. Abrams Has Plans For a Third CLOVERFIELD Movie

With Bad Robot's mysterious 10 Cloverfield Lane coming up very soon, and many still speculating about the connection between that film and 2008's hand-held disaster movie Cloverfield, it's not surprising that people want to know everything they can about what producer J.J. Abrams has in store for us. Well, if things go his way — and this is Abrams we're talking about, so when haven't things gone his way? — fans will probably be treated to a third film in the Cloverfield universe.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Abrams mentioned that a "larger conceit" was at play with this franchise, saying:

"I would be lying if I didn’t say there was something else that, if we’re lucky enough to do it, could be really cool that connects some stories.

This is just this movie, and it’s only two films that we’re talking about right now. There is something else that we’d like to do, and hopefully we’ll get a shot.”

I've seen speculation that the third movie could be other mystery box-based projects the production company already has in development, like God Particle or Collider, but since those projects have been kicking around for a while already, and it's my understanding that the decision to turn Valencia into a Cloverfield sequel was made more recently (relatively speaking), it doesn't seem likely those two projects are connected here.

I'm fascinated by the ideas behind this unconventional franchise, and I really like the anthology aspect of it. Here's hoping Dan Trachtenberg's 10 Cloverfield Lane turns out to be great, and Bad Robot decides to move ahead with plans to connect these stories in an even bigger way.
