John Carpenter Explains Why He Disliked Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN Remake
I was not a fan of Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween. For me, the movie was just so uninteresting in every way because it completely defeated the purpose of what Michael Myers is. I've always wondered what Halloween creator John Carpenter thought of the film, and thanks to a recent interview with New York Film Academy Students (via iHorror), now we know!
Turns out he felt the same way about the reinvention of Myers as many horror fans did. Also, apparently Zombie said some things about Carpenter that weren't true, and he didn't care for that. Carpenter explains:
"He lied about me. He said that I was very cold to him when he told me that he was going to make [Halloween]. Nothing could be further from the truth. I said, 'Make it your own movie, man. This is yours now. Don't worry about me.' I was incredibly supportive. Why that piece of shit lied, I don't know. He had no reason to. Why did he do it? So, frankly, that will color my response to the film. If I take that away, I did not... I thought that he took away the mystique of the story by explaining too much about [Michael Myers]. I don't care about that. He's supposed to be a force of nature. He's supposed to be almost supernatural. And he was too big. It wasn't normal."
Exactly! Michael Myers is supposed to be a force of nature! Zombie seemed to completely ignore that huge important aspect of the character when making his film. There was really no point in giving Myers the backstory of being a disturbed young boy with shitty parents. Doing that was a complete disservice to the character.
I loved the nightmarish, suspenseful feel of the original film. That was all stripped away in Zombie's film, and it was replaced with lots of predictable blood and gore. What do you all think about Carpenter's thought on the Halloween remake? Do you agree with him or not?
