Jonathan Frakes Wants to Direct STAR TREK 3
We recently reported that Star Trek franchise screenwriter Roberto Orci is no longer set to direct Star Trek 3. The studio apparently has a short list of directors they would like to see direct the movie, and it was revealed that Edgar Wright is one of them.
As soon as word got out that Star Trek 3 didn't have a director a hashtage started trending on Twitter — #BringInRiker. They are campaigning to get Paramount Pictures to enlist the former Star Trek: The Next Generation First Officer and veteran Star Trek director Jonathan Frakes for the job.
After several days of this, Frakes responded and said he would love to do it. In a radio interview with Komo News, Franks let fans know that he's "all over it." Here's a breakdown of what Franks said:
"Hashtag, BringInRiker!" he yells to me from his cell phone. "I'm all over it. I'm all over it."
Frakes says he's made first contact with Producer J.J. Abrams, and his agent has reached out to Paramount Pictures. "I would love that job," he says.
Typically, directors are coy about their ambitions. Not Frakes. "I say, unabashedly, I'd be great at it and would love to do it."
Hell yeah! I'd love to see Frakes get the gig. If at one point the studio was willing to give it to a guy that has never directed anything before, it makes more sense to give the job to someone who has a long history with Star Trek and who also has some experience directing. Seems to me like he's a better choice for the job than Orci was. But, who knows, the studio might have someone even better lined up... like Wright. If Wright doesn't work out. though, then sure! give the gig to Frakes! He directed Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection.
