Joss Whedon Made More Money From DR. HORRIBLE Than THE AVENGERS

Here's an intriguing fact Joss Whedon revealed during a reunion for his Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog at Paleyfest NY. The filmmaker said that he made more money from his self-financed internet musical web-series than he did from writing and directing Marvel's The Avengers, which grossed over $600 million!

He didn't offer any details on the amount of money he personally made, but it just goes to show you how powerful the internet is, and that making awesomely fun content actually has the ability to pay off in spades. It doesn't hurt to be Joss Whedon either, or to have the amazing cast he was able to put together.

Dr. Horrible was such an entertaining series, and when talking about it, Whedon said that when he couldn't get traditional Hollywood backing for it he decided to fund it himself. He jokingly explained, "This is my mid-life crisis. It isn’t a car — it’s an internet musical.”

I believe the success of Dr. Horrible ushered in a whole new era of internet greatness. After it blew up online, I started seeing more and more web series popping up, and now the internet is full of them.

It's great to know that it paid off for Whedon in the long run. It's kind of crazy to think that he made more money for this little web series than he did the epic blockbuster.

As far as a Dr. Horrible sequel goes, Whedon isn't ready to commit to it fully just yet. He did say that the plan for a sequel “is where it’s been for a long time.” Two weeks after the premiere of Dr. Horrible, the creative team started planning it out, writing songs and conceiving stories. Around that same time, Whedon went to work for Marvel, and after that Whedon said, “and the rest is a blur.”

I hope we do eventually see a sequel, the fans sure would love it! We'll just have to wait and see what Whedon decides to do next.
