Kevin Feige Discusses GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY's Influence on THOR: RAGNAROK and Says It Goes Beyond the Nine Realms
For anyone excited about Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige talked more about the film. He discusses the tone of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 carrying over to the film, how much of the story takes place on Earth, and teases that the story will go beyond the nine realms, which is exciting to hear!
During an interview with ScreenRant, Feige was asked about how we might see the side of the Guardians franchise expand in future MCU film and when answering the question, Feige used the new Thor film as an example of carrying that tone over. He also teased some of the things we can expect to see from the movie film:
"I don’t know about branching off from this, but certainly inhabiting similar areas from this. A lot of our upcoming movies will. I mean the upcoming movies will be as much up here, as they are on Earth, starting with not Spider-Man, starting with Thor: Ragnarok. There are three scenes on Earth in Thor: Ragnarok. Everything else is Asgard, and not all of these worlds, but world that certainly, let’s put it this way, in Thor lingo, it’s beyond the nine realms. There are other planets that we spend a lot of time on in Thor: Ragnarok, that certainly people would say, ‘oh, that’s sort of like the Guardians world’, but they’re just other areas of the Marvel cosmos universe."
We know that one of those planets will include Planet Hulk's Sakaar where Thor and Hulk will fight in gladiator matches. There's also no doubt that film will also spend some time in Hel, which is where Cate Blanchette's Hela dwells. In the film, we'll see Hela attempt to bring the hardcore apocalypse Ragnarok down on Asgard. Thor and Hulk will embark on a journey to stop it. While on their adventure, it sounds like they may be stopping off at a few other different planets in the Marvel cosmos.
These thoughts are in line with what Chris Hemsworth was talking about back in 2015 when he said that Thor: Ragnarok needed to have some Guardians of the Galaxy-style humor.
"I think it needs to be injected with that sort of smart wit and unexpected kind of humor, kind of what James Gunn came in and did with Guardians [Of The Galaxy]. It was like off center and unpredictable and I think we can definitely use a dose of that, you know. We’ve done regal. We’ve done Shakespeare, and we’ve shown that. I think now it’s time to go, ‘Ok, cool. Let’s try something different,’ and Taika just had such a brilliant sort of take and funny kind of ideas about where we could, how we could do that."
Sounds like Hemsworth got what he was looking for! Thor: Ragnarok arrives in theaters on November 3, 2017.
