Kevin Feige Says He’s Excited to Explore the Multiverse and Gives Update on CAPTAIN MARVEL Director
Marvel is about to open up a whole new can of awesome sauce with the release of Doctor Strange. The MCU is going to get much bigger, more magical, and start to explore a side of the universe that is insanely exciting.
In a recent interview with Marvel, Kevin Feige talked about exploring this whole new multiverse that is opening up and why he’s excited about playing with it:
"Well, you know, what's so amazing is, as you well know about the comics, is there are so many areas to play with. There is so many characters to play with and every time we introduce a new one to our cinematic universe, that's just another storytelling tool in the toolbox, and of course Doctor Stephen Strange himself, that power base, but the whole notion of sorcerers now can expand into our movies and the notion of parallel dimensions and alternate realities and the multiverse is something that we're very excited to explore."
The exploration of this multiverse will continue with their upcoming Captain Marvel film. The movie has yet to sign a director, but Feige is on the verge of hiring one. In a separate interview with Vulture, he explained why the process is taking so long and said they will make their decision by the end of 2016.
“I expect to have a director by the end of the year. We’ve been meeting amazing filmmakers, but often the way we work, as was the case on Doctor Strange and most of our movies, is that we have a … I don’t want to say a ‘road map,’ but we have a general view of what the movie is and then we meet with filmmakers and share that with them and then they pitch it back to us in a better fashion.
“With Captain Marvel, there’s so much potential in the comics and there have been so many incarnations of her powers and the characters who’ve had that mantle that we’ve been focusing in on exactly how do we tell her origin. How does it fit into the cosmic side of our universe? How does it fit into what we’re doing with the next Avengers movies? So really, that’s what’s been delaying that particular announcement.”
Some of the directors the studio is considering include Niki Caro (Whale Rider), Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World), and Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland). Marvel's choice could be one of these three or it could be someone completely different. We’ll just have to wait and see! He also talked about the character and explained that she is the strongest character they’ve ever brought to the big screen:
“It’s very important to us that all of our heroes do not become silhouette-perfect cutout icons. All of the Marvel characters have flaws to them, all of them have a deep humanity to them. With Captain Marvel, she is as powerful a character as we’ve ever put in a movie. Her powers are off the charts, and when she’s introduced, she will be by far the strongest character we’ve ever had. It’s important, then, to counterbalance that with someone who feels real. She needs to have a humanity to tap into, and Brie can do that.”
Captain Marvel will hit theaters on March 8th, 2019, and I’m excited as hell to see what they give the fans!
