Live-Action ROBOTECH Movie Back in Development
I've never seen an episode of the 1980s anime series Robotech, but a live-action film version has been kicking around Hollywood for years. Last we heard, Leonardo DiCaprio was interested in the movie, but that version fell apart a couple of years back. Now Deadline reports that the movie is back in development again, with Mama director Andy Muschietti being eyed by producers Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra scribe Michael Gordon is writing the screenplay, which presumably will use the same basic plot as previous versions:
Robotech takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off an alien invasion, with the fate of the human race ending up in the hands of two young pilots.
Look, I know some of you are probably thinking, "ANOTHER movie about humanity using giant robots to defeat aliens?" but I ask you this: it can't possibly be worse than Transformers: Age of Extinction, can it?
No word yet on who the studio has in mind to star or a timetable for production, but any movement on this dormant property should be considered a good sign for fans of Robotech. Interested in seeing a live-action version hit the big screen?
