Maisie Williams Gives Cryptic Update About Jon Snow's GAME OF THRONES Fate
I'm about halfway through reading A Dance With Dragons, the fifth and most recent novel in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, and I'm very curious to see how the book compares with the way we left off with HBO's Game of Thrones. (Spoilers for the show are ahead, so don't read on if you're not caught up.)
After the last season's finale, I wrote about whether or not Jon Snow would stay dead, and since then we've seen photos of Kit Harington near the show's sets and as the cornerstone of the season 6 marketing campaign. So it's pretty clear that Jon is returning in some capacity, but whether or not he'll be resurrected, appear a corpse, or maybe somehow turned into a wight or a White Walker remains to be seen. Harington's co-star Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark, has been incredibly vocal about Jon's death since the finale, going as far as to say "there's no hope" he survived. (Whether Melisandre ends up bringing him back is a different story, and a possibility I don't believe she's commented on.)
Last night, Williams spoke on the red carpet of the London Film Critic's Circle Awards and now seems to be admitting that the character will at least return to the show, but perhaps not in the state we all hope he'll be:
"I feel so mean because I speak to people and they’re all like 'Jon Snow, is he back?' and it’s like really heartbreaking because people are like 'yeah, but he’s coming back though?' It’s a great twist but I can’t say he’s going to be alive."
She can't say he's going to be alive? Like, she isn't allowed to say that, or maybe won't because it would ruin a surprise? Or she can't say that he's going to be alive in the first scene of the season premiere, but then maybe he gets brought back to life? There are so many different ways to parse that quote, and none of it brings us any closer to the truth, which we'll only truly know when the show finally comes back to HBO on April 24th.
Let's wrap this up with literally one new shot of Jaime Lannister in season 6 that appears in a new HBO teaser:
