Marvel is Changing CAPTAIN MARVEL's Origin Story Because It's Too Similar to GREEN LANTERN
One of the Marvel films I'm most excited about seeing in the coming years is Captain Marvel. Brie Larson is set to star in the film as Carol Danvers, and she's going to be great. The script for the film is currently being developed by screenwriters Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve, and it looks like they'll be giving Captain Marvel a whole new origin story.
Perlman was recently a guest on the Any Time With Vin Forte podcast, and while on the show she talked about the time she spent in Marvel's Writers Program, which is where she got her start, and also discussed the Captain Marvel story she is working on. Perlman is also credited with writing the first draft of Guardians of the Galaxy. which was changed drastically when James Gunn jumped on board.
Perlman revealed on the podcast that Marvel is changing Captain Marvel's origin story because it too similar to Green Lantern's story. In the comics, both characters get their powers from an alien source. In Captain Marvel, Danvers is saved by a Kree warrior named Mar-Vell after a Kree machine explodes and exposes her to Kree radiation. In the process Danvers is infused with Mar-Vell's superhuman powers. When talking about their plans for Captain Marvel, Perlman says:
"I don’t think I’ve ever had a project where I’ve been more mindful about the impact that it could have and the importance of it. She’s such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc recently. But here’s the thing, if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do. There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen. And also, she’s her own person and she’s a great character. We have to be aware of what’s happened in other Marvel film and makes sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that’s going on at the same time. It’s a little bit of an interesting story gauntlet. It’s been good to have a partner. It’s been an incredible experience. If we can pull it off it could be an incredibly important but also really fun and kick-ass superhero film.”
She doesn't give any details on what Captain Marvel's new origin story will be, but I'm sure Marvel and the writing team have come up with something cool. The studio tends to know what they are doing when the reinvent certain aspects of their characters and that's proven in the awesome films that they keep pumping out.
Captain Marvel isn't set to be released until March 8th, 2019, so we've got a long time before we really start finding out any kind of solid information. This change in origin story is the first big reveal of something involving the story for the film.
