Marvel’s DOCTOR STRANGE is Pulling “Some Shit Out No One’s Ever Seen Before”

I’ve got incredibly high hopes for Marvel’s Doctor Strange film. This is one of my favorite Marvel characters ever and from what I’ve seen, it looks like director Scott Derrickson has pulled off something special. I just hope the movie ends up being as great as the trailers make it out to be.

You’ve all seen the trailers, so you know that this movie is going to be a very different film than anything Marvel has done before. In an interview with EW, Derrickson spoke about the film's visuals:

“All I will say is that the movie deals heavily with other dimensions… There was a fair amount of surrealist art and photography and M.C. Escher that played into the visual design of the movie. The ambition was to use cutting-edge visual effects to do things that are fresh and new — to not just blow things up.”

Tilda Swinton, who is taking on the role of the Ancient One in the film, expands on that, teasing that Marvel is going to give us stuff no one has ever seen before:

“My home is in experimental cinema. I’ve always worked with people who are messing with stuff. Marvel is going to pull some s— out no one’s ever seen before.”

I believe we’ve only gotten a taste of the insane visual effects this movie has to offer, and I’m truly excited for what Marvel, Derrickson, and their production team have come up with to bring this world to the big screen. When talking about the main villain of the film, Kaecilius, who is being played by Mads Mikkelsen, the director said:

“I wouldn’t call him a villain, and Mads [Mikkelsen] won’t call him a villain… He has a very compelling point of view that Doctor Strange is confronted with in the movie. That, to me, is what makes a good opponent for the hero of a story.”

Kaecilius seems like an interesting looking and compelling villain. The Marvel universe could really use another good villain. One of the main things I hear fans complain about in regards to the Marvel films is their weak villains. Hopefully, Mikkelsen’s version of Kaecilius will impress.

Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.

Doctor Strange also stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, and Benedict Wong. It will open in theaters on November 4th.
