Meryl Streep to Join Emily Blunt in Disney's MARY POPPINS RETURNS
Oscar winner Meryl Streep is in talks to join Emily Blunt is Disney's upcoming Mary Poppins Returns. The movie is being directed by Rob Marshall, and if Streep is cast, it would kind of be an Into the Woods reunion as they all worked on that movie together. Streep and Blunt also worked together on The Devil Wears Prada.
According to Variety, Streep would take on the role of Mary Poppins’ cousin, Topsy. This is a supporting role that wasn’t in the 1964 classic. Streep would also be required to sing in the role, which isn't a surprise. She's been singing a lot in movies lately. The movie also stars Lin Manuel-Miranda as a new character, a street lamplighter named Jack. Here are some previously released details on the story:
Drawing from the wealth of material in P.L. Travers’ seven additional novels, the story will take place in Depression-era London (when the books were originally written) and follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.
I'm curious to see how this movie turns out. The original movie was a favorite of mine when I was a kid, and I can't wait to see how this new story plays out. Disney has brought together a talented team to develop it, so I'm hoping for the best! On top of that, Blunt is going to make a perfect Mary Poppins.
