Mike Meyers Would Love to Make AUSTIN POWERS 4
Who can forget the great one-liners from the Austin Powers Franchise? Yeah, Baby! Get in ma belly! Zip it Scott. That film franchise truly understands comedy in a way that no other... I can't anymore. Yeah, it's a funny franchise, but it also was cheesy as hell! I won't say it's as bad as some Adam Sandler movies around the same time, but it relished in the campiness. The best film in the series had to be the first. Now Mike Meyers has recently said he may be up to doing a 4th.
In an interview with THR, Meyers and director Jay Roach talked about the possibility of doing a 4th entry of the series, but years later like many other films are doing nowadays. Roach had this to say:
"We have talked about it for 15 years. We have also always said we don't want to do it unless we came up with something that lived up to the concepts in our mind. Until Mike feels like he has a concept that earns a fourth, it won't happen. But if it did, we have all agreed that we would be delighted to get back into it."
Meyers added:
"I would love to do another, but you just have to see."
I think that's actually really responsible. Don't just go ahead and make weird and crappy movies because of the power of the sequel. Anchorman was a fantastic film and Anchorman 2, while not quite the worst thing in the world, just felt unnecessary. The redeeming factor for the whole movie was that battle scene in the park with all the news studio. All I really cared about was that. So I'm glad that Mike Meyers cares about his film property enough to hold off, but not completely take it off the table. Mad Max: Fury Road was proof that a sequel years later can work, if it's made because there was a story that wanted to be told.
So I say make the movie, Mike. But only when you're ready and when the idea you get is a good one. Create the Mad Max: Fury Road of Austin Powers films. That's something we can all get behind.
