MOCKINGJAY Director Has an Idea For a HUNGER GAMES Prequel
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2 is in theaters right now, but after the crushing boredom of the half-assed Part 1, I can't even bring myself to get interested enough to go see it. But legions of people are going to head to the theaters this weekend to see how Katniss Everdeen's story comes to a close, and Lionsgate executives will surely shed a little tear once they've made all the money there is to be made from that movie. But that might not be all the money left to be made from the franchise as a whole: the studio naturally wants to keep the money-making machine churning with prequels or sequels, and Mockingjay director Francis Lawrence has an idea for what a prequel might look like.
He told EW:
“The interesting part of the story for me is to go back 75 years earlier and see how everything became the way it is,” says Lawrence. “I’m sure if [author] Suzanne [Collins] were to get inspired and decide there’s another story that’s important for her to tell that exists within the world of Panem and whether about the Dark Days, another character, or another set of Games, whatever that could be, I’m sure it would be great. And I’d loved to be involved, absolutely.”
But even though Josh Hutcherson implied that there might be another movie in the franchise, I wouldn't bank on seeing him or mega-star Jennifer Lawrence returning to Panem again, and Lawrence agrees:
“I just think with the end of this story, we’ve reached the end of Katniss’ story,” Lawrence explains. “I think that Suzanne created such an iconic character, and I think she’s the main reason why everyone comes back to these stories. Now, that’s come to an end.”
What do you think? Would you be interested in seeing a prequel movie that depicted how the first Hunger Games came to be?
