Molly Ringwald Was Perfectly Cast as Archie's Mom in RIVERDALE Series
The CW is in production on a new TV series based on the classic Archie comics. It's called Riverdale, and it's being developed by TV producer Greg Berlanti, who has given us Arrow and The Flash. The show is a gritty reimagining of the comic that is set in the modern day and features characters from the comic.
One of those characters is Archie's mom, and according to TVLine they've cast Molly Ringwald in that role. Ringwald is a perfect choice to take on the role. She's best known for her '80s films like Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club. She most recently had a five-season run on the then-ABC Family drama The Secret Life of the American Teenager.
The character will appear in two episodes in the first season, and the report offers the following information on her story arc:
Having left Riverdale two years ago to follow her dreams, Ringwald’s Mary Andrews comes back to town in her family’s hour of need. She not only reconnects with Archie (played by New Zealand actor K.J. Apa) and her husband, Fred (90210‘s Luke Perry), but also her former high school gal-pals Hermione and Alice, just in time for a Homecoming Dance.
For a little more information on the upcoming series, here's the synopsis:
Riverdale follows the main crew of Archie, Betty, Veronica and their friends, as they explore the surrealistic twists of small-town life, in addition to the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale's wholesome facade. Set in fictional town of Riverdale, N.Y., the drama will focus on the love triangle of Archie Andrews, girl-next-door Betty Cooper and rich socialite Veronica Lodge.
The entire cast of supporting characters, including Reggie Mantle, Archie's rival; Jughead Jones, Archie's best friend; Kevin Keller, a popular gay character; and Josie and the Pussycats; will also be featured and introduced.
Riverdale premieres Thursday, January 26, 2017. In case you missed it, you can watch the first promo for the series here.
