Netflix Chief Talks About Upcoming Marvel TV Shows and Potential Spinoffs

At Netflix's Television Critics Association panel this morning, the streaming services' head honcho Ted Sarandos was asked about the highly-anticipated slate of upcoming Marvel TV series, including The Defenders, Jessica Jones, and the second season of Daredevil. He clarified the timeline of when we can expect a lot of these shows to hit the internet, telling IGN:

“I think ideally there will be a rhythm of about every six months you’ll get a new season or a new series from the Defenders group. And then they’ll crossover into a combined [Defenders] season once we’ve launched the first season of each of the four characters. Some will selectively have multiple seasons as they come out of the gate. So [there will] probably be two launches a year.”

Jessica Jones is slated to arrive sometime in the fourth quarter of this year, but if the "every six months" descriptor holds true, we'll see the former superhero private eye in action sometime in October.

And as for whether or not Jon Berthal's Punisher from the second season of Daredevil could eventually end up with his own spinoff show, Sarandos said:

“It is possible for sure. That’s the beauty of the Marvel universe.” He also added, regarding all the Marvel characters in play on Netflix, “Any of them could spin out into films too.”

It's good to know some of this is coming into focus, and that Netflix won't only be concentrating on one show per year moving forward. I think a lot of people are assuming that The Defenders will take place sometime between the events of the two Avengers: Infinity War movies, and for that to happen, that series would need to debut in either October of 2018 or April of 2019, which means that there would definitely be some of those "selective" multiple seasons coming into play to stay on that pace. But for now, let's just hope Jessica Jones is better than the first season of Daredevil and that these Marvel Netflix shows continue to get better as they go along.
