New Line Is Developing a Horror Film Takes Place in the Land of Oz

It was recently announced that New Line Cinema has picked up the rights to a horror script that was written by up and coming writer Mike Van Waes. The setting for the film will take place in Oz from The Wizard of Oz

THR got the exclusive scoop on this project and this is what they had to say:

The project, which is in the early development stages, will have ties to the universe created in the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum that was adapted into the classic 1939 film starring Judy Garland.
Baum's story — about a young girl and her dog who are swept away to a magical world where she teams up with the Lion, the Tinman and the Scarecrow to face off against the Wicked Witch of the West — has been adapted numerous times over the years and also used as inspiration for various film, TV and stage stories. Along with the 1939 film, there most recently was the 2013 Disney live-action film Oz the Great and Powerful starring James Franco, and the characters have appeared on the ABC series Once Upon a Time. On stage, there was the 1975 musical The Wiz, and another hit show with Wicked, which began in 2003.

There is absolutely no other information on what this project is. We don’t know if it is a terrifying new take on the original story or if it is what Oz is like now. I would love to know. Anyone who knows me knows that the original Wizard of Oz is one of my all-time favorite movies. I am always interested in a new take or expansion of the Oz universe. For instance, if you haven’t read the Dorothy Must Die book series, do it. Totally fun to read and gives you a new perspective of life after Dorothy has killed the Wicked Witch.

Anyway, I have nothing to base an opinion on yet, but I hope that a horror flick set in Oz is as amazing as it sounds. We will keep you up to date on any further info that we can get on this.
