NINA Trailer: Zoe Saldana Becomes Nina Simone in Musical Biopic
A biopic of musician Nina Simone has been in the works for years, and Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy star Zoe Saldana has finally brought it to life. Saldana stars in Nina, which takes the "slice of life" approach to the genre that has become commonplace after Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story skewered the cradle to the grave method. Nina joins Don Cheadle's Miles Ahead and Ethan Hawke's Born to Be Blue in this year's lineup of musical biopics.
Cynthia Mort makes her directorial debut with this film (she wrote it, too), which arrives in theaters on April 22. As far as pure looks go, I'd say SNL's Leslie Jones bears a better resemblance to the real woman than Saldana, but biopics aren't all about looks; it remains to be seen whether the actress will be able to do justice to the story of "The High Priestess of Soul."
