Original Theatrical Versions of the STAR WARS Trilogy Coming to Blu-ray?
It’s been rumored off and on for years that the original theatrical cut of George Lucas' Star Wars trilogy would be released on Blu-ray. The last time this rumor came up was last year. It’s something fans have been waiting to see for years. It’s been a long long time since I’ve seen the pure versions of these films.
It’s now being reported again, and the news comes from director John Landis, who heard it from Lucas himself. If this is true, it means that Disney and Lucasfilm were able to work out a deal with 20th Century Fox, who not only currently owns the release rights to the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy until 2020, but they also permanently own the rights to Star Wars: A New Hope and always will. You can read the tweets delivering the news from Empire Magazine below:
At a Q&A tonight John Landis dropped that Disney are finally going to re-release the theatrical cuts of the original Star Wars trilogy.

Apparently George mentioned it when last they spoke. Somebody put Yub Nub on. Let the celebrations commence!

Judging by the person that this news comes from, this is the most credible source we’ve heard this news from so far. It makes sense for Disney and Lucasfilm to finally release these unaltered cuts of the film on Blu-ray. It was inevitable that something like this would eventually be released. It's one of the things that is in high demand. It’s also the only version of these films that I will actually go out and spend money on again.
Hopefully, Landis’ intel is right. There’s no reason for him to make something like this up, so there has to be some truth to the matter. We just don’t know what the details are yet. We’ll keep you updated.
