Paramount Claims Crowdfunded STAR TREK Film Violates Copyright Because They Speak Klingon
If you're a Star Trek fan, you've likely heard of the ongoing battle between CBS/Paramount and the crowdfunded Star Trek fan film Axanar. If you haven't, CBS is suing the filmmakers, who asked for donations to help complete their film, which was a prequel to the original Star Trek series. Their first complaint to the courts was dismissed due to the non-specific nature of "copyright infringement." Now THR reports that CBS is back with a specific list of things the fan film infringed upon, including "pointy ears," yellow shirts, and the Klingon language!
Sure, Klingon was a language created by the Star Trek franchise...but is that something you can copyright?! You can't copyright the English language, so how is this any different?
We'll see how it plays out in court, but unfortunately we may have to watch this guy's home tour in a non-intergalactic translation.
