Photos of the R2-D2 Unit Used in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII
Star Wars: Episode VII officially wrapped production, and the film is ready to move forward into post-production. Thanks to a user on The RFP, we have some photos from the wrap party event that feature the R2-D2 droid unit that was actually used in the J.J. Abrams-directed movie.
What's cool about these photos is that it looks like R2 has seen some action. The poor droid is battered and dirty, which makes sense for a 50-year-old droid who has taken a few beatings in his day. The question is, will he make it through this next phase of films in full working order? I sure hope so! The Star Wars universe just wouldn't be complete without him.
In a recent interview, Anthony Daniels talked about what he thinks the future will hold for C-3PO, which I imagine would be the same future for R2-D2 since they are basically an inseparable team.
"I think he would go on. Getting spare parts, getting surgery. And I think the people around him, humans and droids alike, would help because he would become part of their daily lives, part of their environment. They wouldn’t want to let him go. You know, I’m a great do-it-yourself person at home. I mend pretty much anything I can, whether it’s melting plastic with a hot skewer from the stove because the plastic is cracked, or with my glue gun mending this or that, or cannibalizing a part from something else that I kept in the workshop. I will keep objects going. I’m not from the throw-away culture, I’m from the make-and-mend culture. Threepio is nice to have around. I think he would go on and on and on."
I'm sure that these droids will be around for as long as Lucasfilm is making Star Wars movies. Star Wars: Episode VII opens in theaters December 18th, 2015.
