PROMETHEUS Sequel ALIEN: PARADISE LOST Is Now Called ALIEN: COVENANT

Not long ago Ridley Scott announced that Prometheus 2 would be called Alien: Paradise Lost. Well, it seems that title didn’t sit well with the director, so he has changed it again! Alien: Paradise Lost is now called Alien: Covenant.

Scott did a Q&A session at the AFI Film Festival recently, and while talking about how he got involved with The Martian, he explained:

"I was going to be doing what will be called Alien: Covenant, which starts shooting next February, and we were struggling then with the screenplay there and then there was a phone call, somebody saying, ‘Listen, we’ve got this thing which is completely written called [The] Martian,' and I said, 'Huh.’ And I sped read it in an hour and by mid-afternoon, I talked to Fox and said, ‘I need to talk to Drew [Goddard]…"

There’s a theme with all these titles that Scott has used for the title of this sequel. It was originally called Prometheus 2, and the name Prometheus is in reference to the story of how a man stole fire from the gods for mankind. He was eternally punished for doing that. Alien: Paradise Lost was the second title for the sequel, and it was inspired by the title of John Milton’s poem that focuses on original sin and the fall of man. Now we have Alien: Covenant and in terms of this film franchise, I imagine covenant means an agreement between man and god.

Of course, if humanity breaks that agreement, there will be consequences. Scott has previously talked about this and how humanity did break that covenant when we allowed Jesus, who was one of the Engineers, to die. Scott explained at the time:

"If you look at it as an 'our children are misbehaving down there' scenario, there are moments where it looks like we've gone out of control, running around with armor and skirts, which of course would be the Roman Empire. And they were given a long run. A thousand years before their disintegration actually started to happen. And you can say, 'Let's send down one more of our emissaries to see if he can stop it.' Guess what? They crucified him."

So now those Engineers want to wipe the people off the face of the earth. Those plans were obviously interrupted when humans have ventured into space where they found the home of the Engineers and discovered their plans to wipe us out. I guess they didn’t see that coming.

From my understanding, Alien: Covenant will continue the story of The Deacon, the Xenomorph-like creature formed following the Trilobite's impregnation of the Last Engineer and how it will be used as humanity's ultimate punishment. The movie will be released on May 30th, 2017.
