Sam Raimi has Met with Maisie Williams to Star in THE LAST OF US

Earlier this year it was announced that Sam Raimi would be producing a feature film adaptation of the badass video game The Last of Us. He surprised fans in Hall H at Comic-Con to make it all official along with writer Neil Druckmann, who is the creative director for the game. Druckmann is currently writing the script and, according to Raimi, he will protect the original material while adapting the 15-hour game into a two-hour story that will put a primary focus on the relationship between the two main characters.

At one point during the Q&A, they were asked about casting, and they revealed that they had already met with Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams, who would be freakin' perfect! For those of you who aren't familiar, she is the young actress that plays Arya Stark. There's nothing set in stone at this time, but it would be really smart of them to cast her. She's such a talented actress that would do a great job bringing the character of Ellie to life.

The story follows "hardened survivor, Joel, and Ellie, a young and capable girl, on their journey through a radically transformed world. Set twenty years after an infectious pandemic spread by thecordyceps virus ravaged the course of humanity, these two people, who were brought together by chance, must make life-altering decisions in order to survive. The Last of Us explores themes of survival, loyalty, love, and redemption in an emotionally charged expedition across a post-epidemic United States."

It doesn't sound like the movie is going to happen anytime soon, but Raimi did say, ”I think we’re going to make a great picture, that’s why we’re here so many years early to announce it.” Also, for those of you hoping for a faithful adaptation Raimi added, “I have great confidence that we’ll have a script that’s really true to the original.”

Druckmann added that he did want to make some changes, and said he had a different opening and a "very different ending" in mind. Thankfully Raimi convinced him to stick close to the original story so that it captures the core of the game. The filmmaker joked, “I started this process thinking I’d have to protect the story from producers, and then I had to protect it from you.”

With Raimi on board and steering this project in the right direction, I think this has the potential to be an incredible film.
